As a new mom, I want to live out the hope of the gospel in front of my children. I want them to see a faith that is real and authentic, a mom who fails and acknowledges her sin, a mom who asks for forgiveness, and a mom who finds her worth and identity in her savior. You could call that the “mom legacy” that I desire to have.

Kristina Gorr of Messy Tired Love recently released a new devotional dealing with this very subject entitled Leaving Your Mom Legacy. I was privileged to get my hands on this book earlier than most and I am oh so glad that I did! (Full transparency: I received a copy for free, but that in no way influenced my opinion of this book. Everything you are about to read are my honest thoughts!)
Kristina writes in such a way that I feel like we are sitting down having a cup of coffee together every time I sit down to read. This 30-day devotional looks at 11 different moms from the Bible. These women were just like you and me. They had their great moments and their downright failures. They spent plenty of time doing very ordinary tasks and not a single one of them knew God would be using their stories 2,000+ years later to encourage other women. Despite their weaknesses and failures (which are often quite dramatic), God not only chose to include them in scripture, he placed most of them in the family line of Christ. Talk about a legacy!
That such broken women were used by God in multiple ways, including the very lineage of his son, is reason for us to rejoice! God can redeem every broken and messy thing in our lives and enable us to leave a wonderful legacy of gospel hope for our children.
Each day asks heart level questions that the reader can ponder, use to examine her own life or use as prayer points. My favorite thing about Leaving Your Mom Legacy is that Kristina constantly points her readers back to the gospel. This is not a self-help, touchy-feely, you-are-a-good-person devotional. It is a warm, relatable, and practical while also being theologically sound and always pointing to Christ.
If you are anything like me, having consistent time for personal worship can be challenging. Leaving Your Mom Legacy is super mom-friendly. Each day is short and sweet, yet jam-packed with rich truth. This wonderful book will remain on my shelf for a long time to come and I see many re-reads in the future, especially in those seasons where I need some encouragement that the ordinary and mundane and messy of daily mom life does matter and is part of God’s overarching story he is weaving in my life and the lives of my family.
To celebrate her new book, Kristina is having a pretty awesome giveaway! You can find the details here. Check out what Kristina has to say regarding her new book on her site here. You can find your copy of Leaving Your Mom Legacy on Amazon. You won’t regret it!
Thinking about all of the things I want to teach and impart to my children can be overwhelming. The day to day tasks of being a mom can seem unseen and sometimes pointless. I know I will fail at mom-ing more than once and in many ways. But there is hope. God sees the small and ordinary. He is bigger than my weaknesses. Because I am his, he will be faithful to sustain through the messy, hard, and mundane. He is writing my mom legacy and yours too. Be encouraged!
