*I am not being paid or otherwise compensated to write this post on online grocery shopping and Walmart did not know I was writing it.
I won’t lie: Ever since I discovered online grocery shopping over a year ago, I have been a huge fan! Some people absolutely love going grocery shopping, but I am not one of those people. To me, it is more of a necessity than a pleasure (except for Publix – shopping there truly is a pleasure, albeit an expensive one). When I first learned that I could order my groceries online and pick them up without leaving my car I had to give it a try!
Options to make grocery shopping easier abound. Some stores will allow you to shop online and then pick them up at a designated time while others have a delivery service. Some have both! I am too frugal to pay delivery fees (or elevated prices in some cases), but the pick up services have caught me hook, line, and sinker!
Today, I am going to talk about Walmart’s grocery pick up service. To be completely honest with you, I love Kroger’s pick up service just as much. Look for a post about Kroger soon as well as some of your other options to simplify your grocery shopping.
Walmart has steadily been adding locations to their grocery pick up service. If it is not available near you now, it hopefully will be before long.
To use the grocery pick up service your order must total a minimum of $30. The best part? It is completely free to use!
How it works:
- Either download the Walmart Grocery app to your smartphone or go to Walmart Online Grocery’s website in your browser.
- Follow the prompts to create an account
- Follow the prompts to chose your pick up location and time
- Shop. One of the best things about Walmart’s service is that you aren’t limited to merely grocery items – you can shop for almost all of your household needs from the rest of the store as well. Need clothes hangers or a shower curtain or garden hose? Not a problem! Clothing, shoes, jewelry, and gift cards are not available via Online Grocery, however.
- Pick up: Follow the signs to the pick up area and check-in via the app or call the number posted on the specially designated parking spaces to let the associate know you have arrived.
- Head home: Yes, it really was that simple!
What You Need to Know:
Pick up times are 1 hour slots starting at 8am and ending at 8pm. Your wait time may be slightly longer during the 4-7pm windows since that is the after work rush. I have never had to wait longer than 15 minutes, which is far faster than I could shop, check out, and get back to the car shopping in the traditional manner.
Forgot something on your list? No problem! You can easily edit your order up until the time listed on your order confirmation. Same day orders may not be able to be edited. Walmart does advertise same day pick up, but I have historically had trouble finding available same day slots.
Most products have multiple images available, making it easy to check ingredients if you like. For the few that do not, I’ve almost always been able to find the ingredients with a quick Google search of the product works well.
I have picked up from a variety of locations and all of the associates have been very friendly. I have also ordered a variety of meat and produce and have only had one issue with meat (the package was open) for which I was promptly refunded when I called customer service. Any issues I have had with produce have been entirely my fault: produce is ordered by the pound instead of per item. I have on occasion ended up with far more of something than I meant to buy. Lesson learned!
The best thing about Online Grocery in my opinion? It saves time; allowing me to spend less time shopping and more time at home. We’re all about simplicity here at Live Simply, Love Well! I have also found it saves money: you see your total inching up as you add items to your cart, making it easier to stick to your budget!
If you need to simplify your life even more? Walmart now offers grocery delivery in many areas! I have not used this yet as it comes with a minimum delivery fee of $9.95 (same order minimum of $30 to use the service applies) and I am currently too frugal to pay for my groceries to show up at my door. I can see this being useful in many situations though!
Also of note: this week I used Walmart and was 2 hours late to pick up due to my Little Lady. I didn’t have a chance to call and let them know because Little Lady was sleeping and no one wants to wake a sleeping baby by calling the grocery store. Plus, I was already planning to write this post and wanted to see if the cold items would indeed still be cold. I am pleased to report my frozen items were frozen, the refrigerated items cold, and the pantry items room temp!
If you are looking to simplify your life, simplifying your grocery shopping is a great way to start. Especially if you have kids or do your shopping after work. Give it a try!

For the first time, I had several items left off of my order. They were all refrigerated items, so my guess is a bag somehow didn’t make it into the crates containing my order. I own partial responsibility since I don’t usually check to make sure all items are present at pick up. I called the customer service number (they give you a thank you sheet containing the number at each pick up) and within 6 minutes of talking to a very nice customer service representative I was given the option to go pick up my missing items or have a refund issued. I chose the refund. I was also given a promo code to get a discount on my next order. That is the second time I have had to call customer service (in over a year of using Walmart Online Grocery) and both times I have been very pleased with the quality of service and the outcome!
